In order to begin behind-the-wheel lessons you must be at least 18 years old and have either: a valid Illinois drivers license, a valid international drivers license or a valid instruction permit issued by the Illinois Secretary of State. In order to receive your instruction permit you must first pass the written exam at the Secretary of State. (For a list of facilities in and around the Chicago area click here.) Be sure to tell the receptionist that you want to obtain your instruction permit. The fee charged by the Secretary of State is $20.
To successfully pass the written exam you will need to study the Secretary of State "Rules of the Road" handbook. Click on the text-link (right) to download a soft copy of the Handbook.
